VideoArtNights 21/22

Video art in the shop windows of the Kunsthalle

Recklinghausen's Kunsthalle Recklinghausen has a new exhibition format: video art nights.
Historically, the windows of the Kunsthalle have been visible from a distance and have been frequently integrated into individual exhibition projects. With Nico Anklam taking over the management of the museum in summer 2021, this part of the building now has a new look for the winter months, nightly from 6 p.m. to 11 a.m. When the Kunsthalle closes, two of the window panes light up with video art. The first video art nights took place in October 2021 with works by former "junger westen" award winner Florian Meisenberg and Spanish artist Anna Malagrida. The video works by Annika Kahrs and Jaan Toomik then dealt with the subject of "travel", appropriate to the proximity of the train station. The last issue of the series included a now historic mm film by John Cavanaugh and a video piece by Bjørn Melhus. Both works were interpreted on the theme of "night vision".

By hosting VideoArtNights, the Kunsthalle is able to offer art that is accessible to everyone, from taxi drivers and commuters to casual passersby, and makes the city shine a little brighter at night.
