art prize goes to Florian Meisenberg
The 2013 "junger westen" art prize in the painting category has been decided: after intensive discussion, the jury voted unanimously for Florian Meisenberg.
The artist (born in 1980) was born in Berlin, studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in Peter Doig's class and currently lives in New York and Düsseldorf. He has had solo exhibitions in London, New York, Berlin and Munich.
The "junger westen" art prize has been awarded every two years since 1948 by the city of Recklinghausen as a sponsorship prize for fine art. It commemorates the "junger westen" group of artists founded in Recklinghausen in 1948. The art prize is endowed with 10,000 euros and is sponsored by the Cultural Foundation of Sparkasse Recklinghausen.
This year, a total of 804 applicants with 2925 works took part in the competition. Artists residing in the Federal Republic of Germany, born in 1978 or later, were eligible to take part.
The following six applicants were shortlisted: Silke Albrecht, Düsseldorf, Benjamin Appel, Karlsruhe, Pius Fox, Berlin, Sebastian Freytag, Cologne, Angelika J. Trojnarski, Düsseldorf and prizewinner Florian Meisenberg, Düsseldorf/New York.
The jury consisted of: Dr. Ulrich Wilmes, Chief Curator at Haus der Kunst, Munich, Prof. Dr. Gregor Jansen, Director of Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Holger Freitag, Chairman of the Committee for Culture and Further Education of the City of Recklinghausen, Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Ullrich, Director of the Museums of the City of Recklinghausen and Dr. Hans-Jürgen Schwalm, Deputy Director of the Museums of the City of Recklinghausen. The two jury members Kalin Lindena, winner of the art prize "junger westen" 2005 and Prof. Leiko Ikemura, Berlin University of the Arts, unfortunately had to cancel due to health reasons.
The exhibition of the art prize winner Florian Meisenberg and seventeen other applicants will open on Sunday, December 1, 2013 (until February 2, 2014). A catalog will be published to accompany the exhibition.
