Im Kabinett – Kim Stolz

13 July – 17 August 2025

Artistic practice can sometimes be extraordinary precise because it dares to do the obvious. In Kim Stolz's paintings, circles dance, floral forms grow, and dabs run repetitively across the canvas. In watercolor, gouache, and acrylic, her works are always named after the time of completion. Kim Stolz's work thus initially simply reveals what her painting consists of in terms of medium and form. We see where she has turned, dabbed, and brushed. It remains a miracle of painting that – when it is a work like Kim Stolz's – vast imaginary spaces open up precisely in this honesty. Canvases suddenly shimmer like superimposed Plexiglas panes, others resemble microscopic blurs, and, last but not least, in some of them, we think we are gazing into distant clouds of color, the depth of which is close to a macroscopic view of the colored nebula clouds through the Hubble telescope. Clouds of color can also be a painting with smoke in the room—at least that's the promise of Judy Chicago's "Atmospheres," which we are currently showing on the middle floor of the Kunsthalle. Kim Stolz's canvases offer a surprisingly related perspective, especially in this context—and are a lasting impression.

Kim Stolz (*1995, Berlin) lives and works in Düsseldorf. She completed her studies as a master student in the class of Prof. Andreas Schulze at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 2023 and was awarded the Anniversary Prize of the Friends of the Art Academy.
