Kuno Gonschior
Seeing Colours
Kunsthalle Recklinghausen
September 20 - November 15, 2020
Twelve years after Kuno Gonschior's last museum exhibition in the Ruhr region, the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen is presenting more than 60 selected paintings by the artist from all of his creative periods, providing a comprehensive insight into the work of one of the most important German colour painters of modernism, who died in Bochum in 2010. Formerly a student of K.O. Götz at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, he taught painting at the UdK Berlin from 1982 to 2000 and took part in documenta 6 in 1977.
Kuno Gonschior achieved early fame in the 1960s with his luminous colour paintings, whose dots of colour and complementary afterimages irritate the eye to the point of pain. In his examination of the concepts of the ‘Interaction of colour’ and Concrete Art, he has since investigated the nature and quality of colour with his paintings of coloured dots, and later impasto paint strokes and stains - conceptual yet experimental, but always highly sensual: Kuno Gonschior interprets his painterly work as a search for knowledge before any theory is formed. His paintings, which have become increasingly large-format over the years, create virtual colour spaces and possess an intoxicating vitality. They break through visual habits and allow the freedom of colour to be experienced. Gonschior's paintings teach us to think colour.
The exhibition and the educational programme were generously supported by the Stiftung Kunst, Kultur und Soziales der Sparda-Bank West.
