Exhibition of the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen 2016

‘WATER, ESPECIALLY THE SEA, OPENS OUR MINDS.’ SINCE THE LATE 1960S, FABRIZIO PLESSI, ONE OF THE OUTSTANDING ITALIAN ARTISTS OF THE PRESENT DAY, HAS BEEN EXPLORING THE ELEMENT OF WATER, WHICH FOR HIM IS A SYMBOL OF TEMPORALITY AND A METAPHOR FOR MEMORY. EARLY PERFORMANCES SHOW THE ARTIST PUNCHING HOLES IN WATER OR ATTEMPTING TO CUT UP A LAKE. LATER, HE REPEATEDLY THEMATISED FIRE AS A SECOND ELEMENT.
The elements of fire and water are also at the centre of the art exhibition planned by Fabrizio Plessi for the Ruhrfestspiele in the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen and in his video tower planned for the foyer of the Ruhrfestspielhaus, whose choreographed images will cause columns of fire to flare up and masses of water to fall. Fabrizio Plessi, who first exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1970 and at Documenta 8 in 1987, held the Chair for the Humanisation of Technology from 1989 to 2000 and for Electronic Scenography at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne from 1994. Plessis created his first expansive video installations in the mid-1970s, in which he transformed monitors into sculptural image carriers. Although he is one of the pioneers of video art, from the very beginning he saw it as just one medium for his sculptural and painterly work. It serves him to allow the power of nature to be experienced directly. This is also the case in his stage designs, for example for the operas The Fall of Icarus (1989) and Ex machina (1994), for a concert by Luciano Pavarotti in New York's Central Park or Mauro Bigonzetti's ballet Romeo and Juliet.
