David Renggli's neon work "Say Yes" on the façade of Kunsthalle Recklinghausen

The neon work Say Yes (2023/2025) by Swiss artist David Renggli (*1974) is currently on view on the façade of Kunsthalle Recklinghausen.

Say Yes is a striking, luminous seascape visible from afar. A sunrise—or perhaps the light of dusk?—is reflected on the surface of the water, with the word “Say” appearing in the sky. Curiously, the reflected lettering transforms into a flowing “Yes” in the rippling water. It is only through the interplay of the words and their reflection, of light and water, that the full message becomes legible.

Renggli’s Say Yes is a highly visible and visually enticing invitation to say “yes” to Kunsthalle Recklinghausen and to discover the exhibitions of a museum that, since 1950, has written post-war history in a former high-rise air-raid shelter, whose façade features windows more than ten metres high. At the same time, the work engages with the history of advertising slogans and neon signs, their promises and faded dreams, while reflecting on light and reflection as carriers of visual meaning in art.

Say Yes is part of a series of temporary light artworks presented on the façade of Kunsthalle Recklinghausen. David Renggli’s installation follows the work of Daan Gielis, which was on view from autumn 2024 to autumn 2025. Say Yes has been on display since autumn 2025 and will remain visible until autumn 2027. Kunsthalle Recklinghausen would like to thank Galerie Wentrup, Berlin, for its support.
