Paper meets sculpture – 11 artistic positions from Recklinghausen

Edgar A. Eubel, Martin Grothusmann, Ludger Hinse, Paul Hülsmann, Judith Hupel, Danuta Karsten, Alfons Kunen, James Larsen, Gerhard Reinert, Emmy Rindtorff, Peter Witucki

The exhibition curated by the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen focuses on the artistic media of paper and sculpture. Both artistic fields have a long tradition and are surprisingly diverse today. The planned exhibition aims to make it clear that they also play an important role among artists from Recklinghausen.

It presents 11 artists who live and work in Recklinghausen, each of whom is no longer an unknown quantity. They will all be represented in the exhibition with different groups of works in order to make the breadth of their respective artistic production visible.

The exhibition, initially limited to ten positions, was expanded to include Martin Grothusmann's works on paper following his unexpected death. Martin Grothusmann, born in Recklinghausen in 1956, lived and worked here. After studying at the Münster Art Academy under Udo Scheel, he returned to his home town. He was involved in the Vestischer Künstlerbund and was also closely associated with the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen through his photographic work. Some of his works are owned by the Sparkasse Vest Recklinghausen and the Westfälische Hochschule Recklinghausen.

The planned exhibition presents works on and with paper, be they painterly (Paul Hülmann, for example, presents unknown landscape paintings from the last two decades), graphic (constructive with Alfons Kunen or Peter Witucki, expressive with Edgar Eubel, Martin Grothusmann and Ludger Hinse, lyrical with James Larsen) or object-like (Danuta Karsten, Gerhard Reinert and Emmy Rindtorff) in a thematic and formal breadth comparable to that of sculpture,
works that have to be presented on pedestals or in another protective frame (Judith Hupel works with iron and stone, Ludger Hinse with iron and steel, Peter Witucki with wood, Alfons Kunen with stone, bronze and stainless steel, Danuta Karsten, Gerhard Reinert and Emmy Rindtorff with found objects and everyday materials, which they process into collages and assemblages).
