Flo Kasearu – Flo's Retrospective

Exhibition of the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen 2022

May 1 – August 7, 2022

With ‘Flo's Retrospective’, the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen is showing the first solo exhibition of Estonian artist Flo Kasearu (*1985) in Germany as part of the Ruhrfestspiele 2022. Flo Kasearu is able to condense socially urgent and politically relevant themes in a remarkable way in her installative and interactive works.
Kasearu will stage her own retrospective for the Kunsthalle, which will be dedicated to global themes such as economic crises and nationalism, as well as exposing the associated absurd aspects of the art system and patriarchal-hierarchical structures. In her artistic practice, Kasearu dissects, explores, negotiates and celebrates the relationship between seriousness and humour, severity and wit. She often finds her material in the everyday, in what happens in families and behind closed doors and should not be seen, and through her artistic practice she brings these themes back to the street and to the people they affect. Kasearu's house in Tallinn is perhaps her most comprehensive work of art, reflecting Estonia's post-Soviet heritage and capitalist reality. Kasearu will stage aspects, objects and themes from her ‘House Museum’ in the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen. Her latest project, the ‘Disorder Patrol’, will make an extended appearance in and around the Kunsthalle and the Ruhrfestspielhaus. A supervisory team dressed in absurd uniforms and equipped with gymnastic bands will ensure that visitors behave in a completely disorderly manner both inside and outside the museum.

Flo Kasearu is one of the outstanding artists of her generation, whose works have already been honoured with numerous awards. Born in 1985 in Pärnu, Estonia, she studied at the art academies in Talinn and Berlin. Her exhibitions have taken her to renowned museums and festivals in Estonia, America, Hungary, Poland, Finland, Lithuania and Austria, where she took part in ‘Steirischer Herbst 2021’ in Graz with her ‘Disorder Patrol’.

An audio introduction by Dr. Nico Anklam to the Ruhrfestspiele art exhibition can be found here.
