Ângela Ferreira

Exhibiton of the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen 2023

May 7 – August 6, 2023

This year’s Ruhrfestspiele exhibition at the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen features Ângela Ferreira. Born in 1958 in Mozambique, she grew up in South Africa and resides in Lisbon today. Within her works Ferreira examines the colonial and postcolonial aftermath on contemporary societies, often regarding the architectural modernism on the African continent and other important locations of European imperialism. Ferreira's sculptural, acoustic and videographic homages focus on the economic, political and cultural African history, as well as works of public figures as Ingrid Jonker, Jimi Hendrix, Diego Rivera and Miriam Makeba. Ângela Ferreira's oeuvre encompasses works from more than three decades that were brought together for this large overview show emphasizing their poetic, political and aesthetic complexity. After numerous international exhibitions, including the Portuguese pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2007, this will be her first solo show in Germany.
